19th March, 2008. 10:28 am. Best Subway Ride Evar

Well, one of them anyway.

On Saturday as I was coming back from an Afro-fusion Bhangra Raggaeton concert, I was sitting on the train, and this guy wearing the same jacket as me and his girlfriend sat down next to me. About five minutes after this, at like 2 in the morning, the train gets held up outside a station for some incomprehensible reason. After a little while of sitting there in despair, the guy says "This train better start moving!" And lo and behold, the train starts moving.
So the guy's girlfriend turns to him and is like "Oh no! You are not taking credit for that!"
So I look right at him, and say "Hey man, thanks a lot for getting the train moving like that."
Her: Oh no! Do not encourage him!
Me: But, he made the train move. I should thank him. We could have been a long time otherwise.
Her: Arrrrgh!
Him: Ha ha ha!

When I got off at 59th street to transfer, there was a homeless guy sleeping on a bench. But he fully had one of those Urban Outfitters white-noise machines that makes wave sounds. It was AWESOME.

Finally, as I was riding uptown on the second train of the journey home, there was another homeless guy asking for change or a job. And a guy on the train was like "Can you type?" Which the homeless guy could, so the prospective employer gave the homeless man his number and suggested he give him a call.
Do you think he'll actually call? Will the Good Samaritan actually put in the guy's name to HR? His friend was counselling him not to help the guy out, which is kind of a dick move.

For those who don't yet know, Gary Gygax, creator of Dungeons and Dragons and thereby roleplaying and a good chunk of the video game industry died today.

22nd February, 2008. 12:34 pm.

As I was going to work today there was a tiny old Chinese lady on the train next to me (Chinese lady may not be Chinese!) who whipped out a spiralbound notebook halfway through the train ride. A couple seconds later, she started singing quietly to herself using the Chinese writing in the spiralbound for lyrics (Chinese lyrics may not be in Chinese!). I was trying to read, so at first I was kind of annoyed at her. And then I realized she was singing the national anthem.
That gave me a big smile.

Also translate some of it if possible. I got the gist of a lot of it, but am unclear on some of the more... specific terms.

Nice to know I can apparently still read Spanish even if I suck at writing/speaking it.

21st November, 2007. 10:11 am. Gripping Donation Update!

So I finally got to talk to someone at the Salvation Army yesterday and they're coming to collect my computer on Friday. Estimated pickup time?
8AM-3PM. Can you be more specific than that? No? Then it's a good thing I sleep between those times on my days off suckers, you're not inconveniencing no one!

20th November, 2007. 11:27 am. Beowulf, Now With 90% Less Spoilers

So I saw Beowulf on Sunday night.
Good movie. The pseudo-animation was a little choppy as far as detail, but the overall effect was pretty cool and the 3D was really exceptional. It wasn't just a gimmick, it was used very effectively to add depth to the screen in a holistic way that helped to draw the viewer into the world of the film.
Also, I went in expecting the movie to be a straight retelling of the Beowulf story, but it was much more nuanced with very human characters and an interesting plot. Certainly a faithful retread of the themes of Beowulf, but not a direct copy of the original story.
Definitely a movie worth seeing even though I originally thought it was going to be awful based on the previews.

20th November, 2007. 11:10 am. In Which: Aggravation

I want to donate my old computer because I have a new one. I am having a RIDICULOUSLY hard time getting anyone to take this. First off, I had to do 3 or 4 Google searches before I could even find a list of New York charities, then all of the charities that supposedly are specifically for the donation of computers seem to be closed and now I can't get the Salvation Army to talk to me on the phone. Apparently 11 AM is "lunch time" and I have to call back at 12:30. This, after they didn't answer their phones at all yesterday.

It's a computer, people! Take my valuable donation, you asshats!

4th October, 2007. 3:32 pm. In Which: Awesome

Last Friday I, Tom, and Nonemorecomic went to see The King of Kong at the IFC Theater down on west 3rd st.
This movie is AWESOME. It's a documentary "about" two men competing to have the world record in Donkey Kong, but it's actually about human nature, the scary stuff that happens when people are placed in a limited environment (if you take of your shirt, you get some plastic beads!), and how completely, ridiculously funny people are without meaning to be.
The movie is only an hour and 20 minutes long, but it's probably the best film I've seen this year. The story is compelling and the action is tight, two things not often found in documentaries.
Anyway, if you don't think it sounds cool, check out the trailer link down at the bottom of the wiki page posted above.

Next up at the IFC Theater? Finishing the Game.

26th September, 2007. 4:07 pm. Wild Food

Well, I correctly identified this plant in Central Park on Monday and was like; "I don't remember how poisonous this is supposed to be. The leaves can be boiled and eaten or something, right? But are the berries... I'd better look this up."
Nice try, pokeberries. You'll have to be faster than that to catch me. Or at least get internet access and start updating your entry on Wikipedia.

Also found a plethora of rose hips (highly edible, but untasty) and some black walnut trees. Am considering if its worth trying to collect any. I don't really like walnuts and they're kind of a pain in the ass to collect in the places I found them (over a stream, for example).
Ah for the months of summer when I had all the blackberries I cared to eat.
